This agency manages and operates the local public affordable housing program to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single family houses to high-rise apartments for seniors.

Based on the limited funding we receive from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development agency (HUD), we provide HUD “Section 8” housing assistance. The correct name for this program now is the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

This is a program that makes market rate rental housing affordable for low income families. Program participants pay a minimum of 30% of their monthly adjusted income for rent and utilities.

This office serves our county’s veterans, their dependents, and widows with application for, and ongoing eligibility for, benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the State Department of Veterans Affairs. They provide information regarding numerous programs, and expert assistance in the development and follow-through of all claims for entitlements.

Within the county government system, this office mainly interacts with Social Services, with additional interaction with Court Services, County Recorder, County Treasurer and County Public Health Nursing Services.

The Veterans Service office also provides assistance in gaining access to state veterans homes and VA medical centers for either in-patient or out-patient treatment, including assistance with transportation to these facilities. They also keep veterans and their dependents informed of any changes in federal and state programs and policies through seminars, news articles, and newsletters.
